Ben Carson will not comment on McCains war hero status

Several Republican presidential candidates have come out against fellow contender Donald Trump’s negative remarks about Senator John McCain’s war hero status after Trump said McCain is only a war here “because he was captured.”

One candidate who refused to comment on Trump’s statements was Dr. Ben Carson. In a media press conference following his speech at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames Saturday afternoon, Carson was asked several times about Trump.

“I don’t comment on what other candidates say,” said Carson. “I’ll let the people decide what they think about other candidates.”

One media member went on further, asking Carson if he believed Senator McCain was a true war hero.

“It depends on your definition of a war hero,” said Carson. “I believe Senator McCain has done some wonderful things. Do we take that away from him because some people disagree with him politically…I think that’s pretty stupid.”

Candidates Scott Walker, Rick Perry, and Rick Santorum have voiced their support of McCain on social media following Trump’s remarks. Walker, Perry, and Santorum will finish up the speaker series at the summit this afternoon.

“Senator McCain is an American hero, period,” said Walker via Twitter. “I’ll denounce any attack against his service and anyone else who wears the uniform.”

“Donald Trump’s comments today make him unfit to be Commander in Chief,” said Perry. “As a veteran I respect Senator McCain because he volunteered to serve his country. I cannot say the same about Mr. Trump.”
